First up is one of my favorite additions to a kids room! Not only is it super calming for kiddos to have a cozy corner, but it’s also a great way to add character to their space. This will give you an opportunity to express your home decor style with a unique hanging, lounge or rocking chair. Take some inspiration from our modern kids chair finds below.

2. Open up the room to keep it simple and spacious

Layout, layout, layout! Nothing is more stressful than a kids bedroom or playroom you can’t even walk through because it’s so cluttered! If you are very intentional about the layout of the room, you can avoid this without having to part with too many of their special belongings! Consider bunk beds for a shared room or a loft bed for an older child to allow plenty of space underneath!

3. Use the 60-30-10 rule

Next, try your hand at the 60-30-10 rule! In design, the 60-30-10 rule is often implemented to keep the balance of a space. Using this rule in a kid’s room will help make the space look more “put together”. Essentially, 60% of the room should be a more neutral, calming color, what should be used for larger things such as walls, furniture and rugs. Next, 30% of the room should be an accent color used for things like accent walls, accent furniture or curtains. Lastly, 10% of the room can be your pop of color to keep things playful!

4. Add unique textures to simple elements

If you are using a neutral palette for a kids room, textures can add personality without disrupting the aesthetic. Typically we think of bedding, curtains, pillows and rugs when it comes to texture. However, furniture, wallpaper & art can come in many textured varieties in a more unexpected way. This can elevate the room to look and feel more high end. Below we’ve linked some playful & modern textural elements.

5. Add plenty of storage (and get playful with it)

With so many options baskets, wall shelves, storage ottomans, and even under the bed storage, there are many opportunities to tuck away toys that just don’t ‘fit’ with the style of your kid’s room. To find the most unique storage options, browsing Etsy is a great way to go! Check out the adorable kids storage baskets we’ve linked below.

6. Incorporate natural elements

Next, natural elements help a kids room look more sophisticated. Furniture with wood natural elements, lampshades made of natural materials, jute rugs, bamboo accents and organic cotton sheets will give off a mature look! Below, we’ve included some fun ideas to incorporate; a natural cane mirror, natural wool blanket and a dried palm leaf to hang on the wall.

7. Consider which bed type is best for the space

There are so many bad options, especially for a little ones. Double beds, raised beds, Montessori style beds, bunk beds, storage beds, day beds. Depending on the kiddos age, you can choose a bed that works best with the layout of their space. Many companies are now making beds and even cribs that fit modern design styles. Be sure to select a bed that maintains the flow of the room. Check out some of our bunk bed and loft picks below.

8. Reduce clutter

As hard as it can be to part ways with toys that carry memories and sentiment, it’s critical to donate old toys to keep a child’s room spacious and allow room for new toys and/or furniture pieces. I love including my children in this part of the process as it makes for good habits at a young age! I have personally noticed my kids appreciate and play with their toys a lot more when there’s not an overwhelming amount of them.

9. Bring life into the room with live plants

All well-balanced spaces should contain natural elements. Plants add a sophisticated touch to a room and they even help purify the air. As an added plus it can be really fun for a child to take on the responsibility of taking care of a house plants. Just be sure to do your research on which plants are safe and nontoxic!

10. Include oversized art

Lastly, this final tip should not be overlooked, because it can make a big impact! Oversized art helps to scale a room. This can really help make a room feel bigger and more luxurious. Wallpaper, murals, large sculptural pieces (not breakable of course), oversized framed art art all great options!

11. Lay down a stylish & functional rug

The Little Nomad Play Mat from @houseofnoa_ has by far been our favorite play room purchase! We bought ours in the Ula print which is a hand-illustrated design inspired by vintage Moroccan rugs. It was super simple to put together and was the perfect soft surface for my little ones to play on! While they look like an heirloom rug (there are tons of stylish, modern options), it’s made of a nontoxic, easy to clean, foam material. This piece is the perfect foundation to style a playroom or child’s bedroom around and you don’t have to compromise style for functionality.
