If you’ve never quite learned the proper way to set a table, don’t worry we have you covered! First, it’s important to understand there are many ways to set a table. Depending on the occasion, table settings can vary from casual to formal. The biggest difference between the two is how much tableware: dishes, utensils & glasses there will be. We’ve created these guides for both casual and formal table setting for you to draw inspiration from for your upcoming events and gatherings.

Casual Table Setting

Casual table settings should be used for informal events such as family dinners, barbecues, brunches & breakfasts. For this table setting, only one simple fork, knife & spoon are required. In a casual table setting, the napkin can be placed to the left side of or on top of the plate and the fork should be placed to the left of the plate while knife and spoon should be placed to the right. Typically only a water goblet and wine glass are necessary for a casual setting and a appetizer/salad plate may or may not be included depending on the nature of the meal. Formal Table Setting

For more upscale dinner parties, weddings and formal events, a formal table setting is the better option. Formal table settings a lot fuller than casual ones with more glassware, utensils and dishes. As far as the main plate goes, it can be placed on top of a charger plate (optional) and it can have a an addition smaller plate layered between it and the napkin. Again, the napkin can be placed to the left of the main plate or on top of it. A soup bowl may or may not be included depending on the nature of the meal.
