Choosing the right rug size can make a big difference in the look and feel of your bedroom. When it comes to selecting an area rug for your bedroom, it’s important to consider the size of your bed to ensure that the rug fits the space properly. In this bedroom rug guide, we’ll cover some guidelines for selecting rug sizes based on common bed sizes as well as the most ideal rug size for each bed size.

General Guidelines

If your rug is too small, it can look out of proportion and make your room feel disjointed. On the other hand, if your rug is too big, it can overwhelm the space and make it feel cluttered.

To determine the right size rug for your bedroom, start by measuring the area beneath your bed. Your rug should be large enough to extend at least 18 inches beyond the edge of your bed on all sides. This will create a comfortable buffer zone and help to visually anchor your bed in the room. Keep reading for our recommendations of the most ideal rug size per each common bed size.

California King Bed

Ideal Rug Size – 9×12

This size allows the rug to extend past all sides of the bed. Be sure to orient the rug so that the long side of the rug runs along the left side through the right side of the bed and the shorter side of the rug runs along the head to food of the bed. See diagram for reference.

King Bed

Ideal Rug Size – 9×12

With a King sized bed, make sure the 9×12 rug extends past the foot of the bed by at least 1 foot. Make sure the rug is oriented so that the long side of the rug runs along the left side through the right side of the bed and the shorter side of the rug runs along the head to food of the bed. For optimal spacing, place the rug so that there’s a gap of 10 inches between the front of the night stand and the start of the rug. See diagram before for visual examples of executing these tips!

Queen Bed

Ideal Rug Size – 8×10

Queen sized beds work well with 8×10 rug oriented so that the long side runs left to right but doesn’t extend past the night stands. Ensure proper placement by having the rug start 8 inches from the front of the night stands. Pro-tip for small bedrooms, select a smaller rug if there’s not at least 12 inches of space from the walls to the rug. See diagram for reference.

Full Bed

Ideal Rug Size – 8×10

While a 5×8 can be large enough for a full bed, especially in a small sized bedroom, the ideal rug size for a full bed is 8×10 as it will provide a bigger visual impact to the room. Orient the so that the long side runs left to right as shown in the diagram.

Twin Bed

Ideal Rug Size – 5X8

For a room with one twin bed, a 5X8 rug oriented so that the long side runs left to right is the optimal choice. The start of the rug should begin about 1/3 of the way down the bed, away from the wall.

Two Twin Beds

Ideal Rug Size – 9X12

For a kids or guest bedroom with two side by side twin beds, a 9×12 rug oriented so that the long side runs left to right. This allows for a cohesive look and helps make the room appear bigger. See diagrams for reference!

Crib

Ideal Rug Size – 5×8

Nursery’s are quite flexible and can work well with multiple rug sizes, but our personal preference is a 5×8 placed next to or tucked just under the front legs of the crib.

Alternative Rug

For extra character, a faux animal Hyde rug can work well with it’s organic shape next to the crib or just tucked beneath the front legs of the crib.

Final Takeaway

Ultimately, the size of your rug will depend on several factors, including the size of your room, the placement of your furniture, and your personal style preferences. By following these guidelines, however, you should be able to find a rug that looks just right under your bed.
