Prep the space & select a color palette

Instead of only adding fall decor to your space, be sure to store away the pieces that don’t work for the season. For example, as I transition from summer to fall I often store faux green plants away and bring out more dried plants and stems that fall within the autumn palette. The first step curate a cozy fall home is your space can be a simple step that ends up saving you time in the long run. Start with cleaning, then searching around your space to see what you can take away before you start adding. The feeling of a clean slate will help you avoid feel overwhelmed. Draw inspiration from things in your home that are neutral, then add the perfect pop of color (like this rust colored bedding from Ballard Designs).

Pillows, pillows, pillows

I always tend to advise purchasing a lot of quality pillow inserts and swapping them out with different covers for each season. The initial investment is more, but you will not regret it when you don’t have to keep a storage room floor to ceiling full of pillows you’re not using during the current season. This also promotes a sense of consistency throughout your house. I love shopping small businesses on Etsy for unique pillow covers. This set of three pillow covers featured in the photo is a great choice, because it provides a preset color palette to draw inspiration from for the rest of your space.

Add texture with throw blankets

Throw blankets are a great way to add texture and incorporate a seasonal color palette. I love coordinating the pillows and throw blankets for a cozy, layered feel. To cut costs, purchasing neutral throw blankets that can also coordinate with your winter decor once you transition seasons, is a great way to go! Waffle knit, chunky wool & fleece blankets are my personal favorite as the weather starts to cool down. These options from Pottery Barn will keep you cozy all Autumn long!

Set the mood with a cozy fall aroma

Candles, linen sprays, wall plug ins, wax melts, oil & reed diffusers are all great options for giving your home the cozy aroma of fall. You can never go wrong with pumpkin, cider, chai, sandalwood or cinnamon. These anthropologie candles capture all the cozy feels, but still smell very elevated & expensive. Your space will feel more elevated with more sophisticated scents rather than the overly sweet ones. Placement is super important in captioning that fall scent throughout the home. First impressions are everything, so I always opt in for an entryway wall plug-in or candle. To be more budget friendly, try to space your sense far enough apart and evenly throughout the home. Bathrooms are always a great choice as well since guests will often find themselves there. In general, focus on the high traffic areas of the home for the best bang for your buck.

Bring the outdoors in (or opt for faux)

Incorporating plants can be as simple as adding some dried fall plants to an oversized pot as a table scape or as simple as adding a wreath or some pumpkins to your front door. This burgundy oak tree from Pottery Barn is worth the splurge if you find this rich color in your fall palette year after year. if Oak branches, pampas grass, faux sumac branches, gourds, pumpkins are beautiful autumnal choices! One budget friendly tip is that olive trees, cherry blossoms, ficus trees and eucalyptus are plants that transition well from spring and summer into fall if green is your palette.

Hone in on focal points of the home

The mantle is often a part of the home that will be seen a majority of the time. Adding some of the plant options we talked about above will elevate your coziness levels right away. One of my favorite tips (if you don’t have a frame tv), is to search vintage autumn art on YouTube and display that while you have guests. This will instantly transform your TV into an art piece that makes your space feel cohesive. To add a modern boho touch, this dried wheat Garland on Etsy is a unique addition. Below the mantle, cozy natural woven baskets filled with textured throws can add character and a slice of autumn to the space. As the first impression of a home, the front door is also a major key in capturing the welcoming, cozy feeling of fall! Adding some mums, a wreath and pumpkins is a minimal, yet impactful way to make a vibey first impression.

Consider a coffee, coco or tea bar

The kitchen often doesn’t need a lot of fall theme decor. However, a wreath added to your pantry door or a Coffee, cocoa or tea bar will promote a cozy feel with minimal effort. Consider cute storage jars, stacking ‘on-palette’ mugs or adding mini pumpkins for a special touch. Just Destiny did a wonderful job keeping her coffee station warm, neutral & perfectly cozy for fall.
